Aston Villa have started contract talks with Ollie Watkins as they look to tie their striker down to a long-term contract.
Reports today suggested Arsenal had ‘opened talks’ with Watkins agent as they look to bolster their attacking options.
Now it’s been reported that Aston Villa will look to fight off any interest from other teams by signing their main striker up to a longer contract.
Unai Emery is trying to push on with the contract agreement as he sees Watkins as his main man up top.
Villa signed Watkins from Brentford for £28m, a fee that could go increase to £32m with add-ons. Since then, he has scored 47 goals in 125 appearances and in the past three seasons he has scored double figures and been their top goalscorer.
Given his numbers, and the fact he’s an England international, it is understandable that teams are having a look at him.
Watkins current deal ends in 2025, the hope at Villa is that they can keep him at Villa Park for a longer period of time.
They’ll need to offer him something big with some of the Premier League’s top teams looking closely at him.
