Team Europe aim to regain the Ryder Cup on home soil this year, having lost by quite a margin two years ago in America. Read on to find out who the 12 players representing Team Europe are and what is their Ryder Cup record is in past events.
Ryder Cup 2023 – Team Europe
12 of Europe’s best golfers aim to regain the Ryder Cup and win back the famous trophy after suffering humiliation two years ago at Whistling Straits. Team Europe will be hoping to bounce back from their 19-9 defeat to Team USA, and will be confident of winning the Ryder Cup for the seventh straight time on home soil.
This year, captain Luke Donald has seven players on his squad who tasted defeat two years ago at the 43rd Ryder Cup. Alongside those seven from last year are four debutants this time around, as well as a returning Justin Rose, who is Team Europe’s highest point scorer out of the 12 golfers this year.
Two-time major champion Jon Rahm and the consistent Tyrrell Hatton were two of Team Europe’s top scorers last time out, with Rahm securing 3.5 points and Hatton winning 1.5 from a possible 4. Four-time major champion and world number two Rory McIlroy and the reigning FedEx Cup winner Viktor Hovland are two of Europe’s best players right now and aim to replicate that kind of form this year in Rome.
Tommy Fleetwood has one of the best records of any of the current Team Europe players, having secured five points from a possible seven in his two previous Ryder Cup’s. Justin Rose has won the most points of any of this year’s European side (14) and returns this year having missed out on a pick at Whistling Straits.
Major champions Shane Lowry and Matt Fitzpatrick are also in a strong European side this year at the 44th Ryder Cup. Fitzpatrick is yet to get a single point in two Ryder Cup’s, so will be desperate to win his first match this year. Lowry too will be hoping for a better event this year after losing 2/3 matches two years ago.
Team Europe has four debutants, including three who got a Captain’s pick by Luke Donald. Sepp Straka, Ludvig Aberg and Nicolai Hojgaard are all set to make their debut this year at the 44th Ryder Cup. Robert MacIntyre is the other debutant for Team Europe, qualifying automatically for Luke Donald’s side.
