Team USA aim to retain the Ryder Cup in Rome, Italy this year, having won emphatically in 2021 at Whistling Straits in America. But just who are the 12 players representing Team USA and playing under captain Zach Johnson at the 2023 Ryder Cup and what is their Ryder Cup record?
Ryder Cup 2023 – Team USA
12 of America’s best golfers aim to retain the Ryder Cup and bring the famous trophy back to the United States. Back in 2021 at Whistling Straits, Team USA regained the Ryder Cup with an emphatic 19-9 victory over Europe. The biggest margin of victory since 1967.
This year, captain Zach Johnson has seven players on his squad who tasted victory two years ago at the 43rd Ryder Cup. Alongside those seven from last year are four debutants this time around, as well as a returning Rickie Fowler, who is back in strong form on the PGA Tour.
Two-time major champion Collin Morikawa and the consistent Patrick Cantlay were two of Team USA’s top scorers last time out, both winning 3.5 points from a possible 4. World number one Scottie Scheffler and the sensational Xander Schauffele were two other standout performers in 2021 and aim to replicate that kind of form this year in Italy.
Justin Thomas, ‘Mr Ryder Cup’, just did enough to gain a Captain’s pick and returns to the Ryder Cup for the third time. Jordan Spieth has secured the most points out of anyone in the current USA team, and did enough to earn a Captain’s pick also.
Five-time major champion Brooks Koepka is the only LIV Golf player to make it to the 2023, after earning a Captain’s pick, more than likely courtesy of his PGA Championship victory and second at The Masters. Rickie Fowler also returns to the Ryder Cup for the first time in five years after missing out two years ago.
Team USA has four debutants, including three who qualified automatically. US Open champion Wyndham Clark, The Open victor Brian Harman and Max Homa all did enough the qualify for Zach Johnson’s team. Sam Burns is the other debutant for Team USA, pipping the likes of Cameron Young and Keegan Bradley to the final spot in the team.
