Joao Cancelo has opened up on his loan move to Barcelona, implying that he wants to stay beyond the season-long deal currently in place.

Joao Cancelo Speaks Out On Barcelona Move

Cancelo is on his second loan move away from Manchester City this year after falling down the pecking order at the Etihad under Pep Guardiola.

The Portuguese full-back spent the second half of last season on loan at Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, but returned to City in the summer after the German side opted against a permanent deal.

Cancelo then finally agreed to join La Liga side Barcelona on deadline day after weeks of talks throughout the summer. The versatile defender has started life in Catalonia well with a goal in his first three appearances.

Xavi has praised Cancelo since he moved to the club and the 29-year-old started in the 5-0 win over Royal Antwerp in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Joao Cancelo: “I Always Like To Take Risks”

The Portugal international has been speaking about his move, accepting it was a risk.

“Yes, it’s risky, but my life has always been a risk. I always like to take risks,” he told Mundo Deportivo of his loan to Barca. “For me (City) are now the best team in the world and coming here was a risk, yes, but it’s Barcelona and when you get the opportunity from Barça you have to come.

“I have to thank everyone at City, I’ve had the best moments of my career there so far, I had the chance to be in last year’s FIFA World XI, which was another dream for me. And that’s thanks to my teammates at City, the coach, Pep, and his staff, who are a very good group, very united and you can see that.

Cancelo was then quizzed on his future come the end of the season.

“I want to perform here first,” he said, suggesting he wants to put in good performances to show what he can do. “First to perform, to win titles with this club, to be an important player in the team, and then to talk about staying or not.

“It will depend on the club, on how well I perform. In the end they measure you by your performance, if you don’t perform, you don’t stay. If you perform, they will want you. So I want to perform, work and enjoy this club.”

Xavi’s side are yet to lose a game this season, with an unbeaten record so far in La Liga, and now the Champions League. Barca host Celta Vigo next.
