UEFA have confirmed the new Champions League rules for next season, where we will see a 36-team tournament with plenty of other new changes. So, read on to see everything that will be different from the 2024/25 season.

From the start of next season there will be major changes with the new Champions League rules. The biggest of those is that we will no longer see a traditional group stage but instead UEFA are implementing a 36-team “Swiss model” league.

The fixtures will be based on seedings with the teams ranked from 1-36. The top eight will advance automatically to the knockouts then the next 16 teams will head into a play-off round to decide the final eight slots for the last-16.

UEFA will create four pots of nine teams. The UCL titleholders from the previous season will be in Pot 1 with all other pots filled via the five-year club coefficient.

New Champions League Rules For Next Season (2024/25)

  • 36 teams (up from 32)
  • Group stages replaced by one big league table
  • Each team plays 10 games in the first phase (5 home, 5 away)
  • 100 additional games
  • The top eight sides in league phase qualify automatically to the knockouts
  • Teams finishing 9th-24th place will compete in two-legged play-off round to secure place in last-16
  • Last-16 onwards will be played the same as previous years

What About The Europa League & Conference League?

Both of these competitions will also see changes with the Swiss model also being implemented. They will see an increase in teams competing from 32 to 36 as well.

There will be eight group stage games in the Europa League, but only six in the Conference League.

Play-offs will still be in place to reach the last-16, but a major change is that there will be no drop down for the losers (3rd place in group) in the Europa League into the Conference League as we have seen in previous years.
