United’s poor start to the season continued on Saturday as they were brushed aside by Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton in a 3-1 defeat.

Former striker Danny Welbeck put Brighton 1-0 up inside 20 minutes before Pascal Gross and Joao Pedro added two more goals in the second half.

Hannibal Mejbri did pull one back for the home side, but it wasn’t enough as the Red Devils fell to a second consecutive defeat and the club now sit 13th in the Premier League table with six points.

Club legend Schmeichel was critical of the side and also slammed Martinez’s defensive performance and blamed him for the Gross goal.

The former United goalkeeper Schmeichel was speaking after the game: “It is kind of what happens at Manchester United at the minute, it is very individual.

“Players, for instance, Martinez here, are trying to be a hero and get in and block.

“People know this. If we look at him there, he puts himself in a position directly in line of the goalkeeper.

“He should be closing down rather than just stood up trying to block. If you want to block, don’t turn your body, stand tall. Clearly things aren’t right for Manchester United.”

It was another calamitous day for Erik ten Hag’s side and nothing seems to be going right at the club both on and off the field. The Red Devils play Bayern Munich away from home in the Champions League on Wednesday night before a trip to Burnley in the league next weekend.
