Following an impressive start to the season with one win and three draws, Brentford were finally beaten for the first time as Callum Wilson netted the only goal of the game at St. James’ Park.

Wilson thought he’d given the Magpies the lead ten minutes after the restart after poking home from close range before VAR intervened and disallowed the goal for a foul on Brentford stopper Mark Flekken.

Five minutes later, Newcastle were awarded a controversial penalty by referee Craig Pawson when Anthony Gordon was taken down inside the area by Flekken and VAR confirmed the decision.

Wilson stepped up and converted from the spot to mark the first and only goal of the game, handing the hosts a vital three points following three consecutive defeats at the hands of Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton.

Brentford were undefeated heading into the fixture with draws against Spurs, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth alongside three points against Fulham, but as we know all good things must come to an end (unless your name is Ange Postecoglou).
