Harry Maguire’s mother has taken to social media to slam the ‘disgraceful and totally unacceptable’ abuse her son has received following his own-goal against Scotland at Hampden Park on Tuesday.
Despite England overcoming Scotland with a 3-1 scoreline on Tuesday evening, it was Harry Maguire who made the headlines once again – this time for an own-goal during his second half cameo.
The Manchester United defender was criticised by both fans and members of the media, with many reiterating that Gareth Southgate shouldn’t be handing the defender call-ups due to his lack of minutes at club level.
He was also heavily booed by Scottish fans in the stands at Hampden Park, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere for many within the ground, and many of those watching from home.
Southgate was quick to defend Maguire post-match though, labelling the treatment he received as ‘an absolute joke’, and admitted that he was ‘livid’ at the levels of abuse.
His England teammate Aaron Ramsdale defended him in his post-match press conference too, and claimed that Maguire is ‘one of the best defenders’ the Three Lions have got.
And now, Maguire’s mother Zoe has taken to social media to defend her son, and has labelled the abuse he received as ‘disgraceful and totally unacceptable.’

“As a mum, seeing the level of negative and abusive comments which my son is receiving from some fans, pundits and the media is disgraceful and totally unacceptable to any walk of life never mind someone who works his socks off for club and country.” Zoe Maguire wrote on Instagram.
“I was there in the stand as usual, It’s not acceptable what’s been created, over nothing. I understand that in the football world there are ups and downs, positives and negatives but what Harry receives has gone far beyond ‘football’.
“For me seeing him go through what he’s going through is not ok. I would hate to have to see any other parents or players go through this in the future, especially the young boys and girls breaking through the ranks today.
“Harry has a massive heart and it’s a good job he’s mentally strong and can handle it as others may not be able to. I wish this sort of abuse on nobody.”
