Manchester United’s opening game against Wolves ended with a 1-0 victory. The result has put Manchester United Premier League winner odds to 10/1.

Many thought a Wolves squad who only four days announced Gary O’Neil as their new manager would be a walkover for the Red Devils. Those people were wrong.

Wolves were unlucky to not take the lead after several big chances in the opening 45 minutes. Matheus Nunes was the star in the first half, and throughout the game, as he showed great skill and pace to bomb forward.

Wolves continued to threaten throughout the second half. Nunes and co looked a threat each time they went forward. They ended the game with 2.23 expected goals, compared to just 1.46 for Manchester United.

Despite all their attacking play, they weren’t able to trouble Onana who was making his Premier League debut.

Manchester United’s chances were limited throughout the game. Marcus Rashford had no clear chances and looked a frustrated figure leading the line for his club.

It was Raphael Varane who scored the games only goal. Aaron Wan-Bissaka chipped the ball over the on rushing ‘keeper and Varane was there to tap home.

Despite taking the lead, Manchester United still didn’t take control of the game. Wolves created more chances but still couldn’t find a way to score.

In the final moments, Wolves appealed for a penalty after Onana clattered a Wolves player. Despite the clear contact, VAR decided against giving a penalty.

They’ll need some luck, and their bitter rival Man City to be some way off their best, if they’re to win the league.

Manchester United have improved again this summer, and they’ll be wanting to push on. However, this season may be a little too soon for Erik ten Hag’s side.
