St James’s Park was throbbing with fervour over the weekend as a resplendent sea of black and white basked in that oh-so-glorious winning feeling, having comfortably dispatched Aston Villa with a 5-1 drubbing.

Eddie Howe’s men picked up where they left off after last season’ magical run from the Champions League, and the additions of Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes – both of whom got on the scoresheet – appeared to add another heavy sprinkling of quality to a squad already brimming with confidence.

Howe was quick to the remind the press of the stumbling blocks that await them later in the season, namely having to juggle Champions League football and three domestic competitions, and asserted that he and his side would be taking it game-by-game.

Indeed, with the Magpies now competing at the very highest level on all fronts, reports suggest that their summer business is far from over.

According to the Telegraph, their well-documented search for reinforcements at left-back has surfaced once more after going dark for several weeks.

The club feel there are several market opportunities to take advantage of, and have settled on a handful of key targets with a view to proposing an initial loan deal.

Chief among them are Marc Cucurella and Kieran Tierney. The former has suffered under the weight of his inflated price tag since arriving at Chelsea, and a loan deal may present an opportunity for more game time.

This is all the more apparent after Ben Chilwell impressed in the Blues’ opening fixture – should he stay fit, Cucurella would struggle for minutes.

As for Tierney, Arsenal are said to be actively working to resolve his future. Whether the injury to Jurrien Timber in their opening game has a bearing on this decision remains to be seen, but the Scotsman has been heavily linked with a departure this summer after seeing his game time reduce significantly.

Real Sociedad have already had a loan deal proposal rebuffed by the Gunners, so it is likely Newcastle would have to change their tune and offer a permanent contract.

Newcastle are wary of the constraints imposed by Financial Fair Play, which is leading them to seek out an initial loan deal.
