Following the departure of Harry Kane, and the impending exit of Hugo Lloris, Heung-min Son has been appointed as Club Captain of Tottenham.

Ange Postecoglou has appointed Heung-min Son as Club Captain of Tottenham Hotspur, the club has confirmed.

The Athletic‘s David Ornstein claims that the decision has been well received by both the club and the squad, whilst Cristian Romero and James Maddison have been named as vice-captains.

Of course, the club’s previous captain was Hugo Lloris, and although he is yet to find a new club, he is almost certain to depart.

Harry Kane would’ve been the clear replacement for Lloris as Club Captain, however the England skipper completed his move to Bayern Munich earlier this morning.

Son is approaching his ninth season in north London, and already has experience captaining South Korea, for whom he has 111 caps.

Speaking to Tottenham’s website upon the announcement, Son expressed his delight at taking up the new role.

“It’s such a big honour to captain this huge club.

“It was big surprise and a very proud moment. I’ve already said to the players that everyone should feel like a captain, on and off the pitch.

“It’s a new season, a fresh start and I will give everything for this shirt and this armband.”

Head coach Postecoglou also had his say on Son’s appointment as captain.

“Sonny has great leadership qualities, both on and off the pitch, and is the ideal choice to become our new captain.

“Everyone knows he is a world class player, and he has enormous respect from everyone in the dressing room.

“He transcends groups within the squad. That’s not just because he’s popular – it’s because of what he has achieved in the game, both here and as captain of South Korea.”
