Story Of The Game
The South Coast side went 1-0 up early on as Nathan Tella’s excellent left footed effort found the back of the net, thanks to the smallest of deflections from Adam Armstrong’s head, and they completely controlled the opening stages of the game. Wednesday looked like a League One side at first, but eventually grew into the game.

However, Wednesday were not to be frightened and came out in the second half with some fight. The pressure applied payed off and Lee Gregory fired them level with a cool finish.
In a well-contested game in the end, it was everything that was expected under the lights on opening night at Hillsborough. Plenty of chances came and went for Southampton, but in the end they prevailed.
Substitute Che Adams turned home a smart James Ward-Prowse pass to put his side ahead with just a few minutes of normal time remaining making it 2-1. The former Sheffield United man ensured he sunk the blue side of the city to send Russell Martin’s side top of the league.
