2023 Stewards’ Cup Trends to Help You Find The Winner
One of the big sprinting handicaps of the season takes place this Saturday as a huge field (max 28 runners) line-up for the Stewards’ Cup on Saturday – the final afternoon at Glorious Goodwood.
The last two runnings have been won by the Michael Dods-trained Commanche Falls but he’s progressed up the ranks and is now running outside handicap company and is not back to try and defend his crown.
We could, however, see the 2020 Stewards’ Cup winner Summerghand back for more at the age of 9, while the Charles Hills runner Orazio has been all the rage in the betting and the likely favourite.
So, to help find the winner – let’s look at the key 2023 Stewards’ Cup trends to look out for and hopefully by applying these to the final runners it will help point you in the direction of Saturday’s big Goodwood handicap.

Look For Horses Aged 6 or Younger
First up is to look at the age as a massive 95% of the last 20 winners were aged 6 or younger. This means we should be able to put a line through several, including Mr Wagyu (8), Spanish Star (8) and Hyperfocus (9).
This is backed up with only Lancelot Du Lac (7) winning the race aged 6+ since 1996.
It’s been the 4 and 5 year-olds that have the best recent record with 13 wins in the last 20, which is good news for the likely favourite Orazio, who is 4.
Three (or more) Runs This Season Is a Must-Have
Having at least three runs this term is another Stewards’ Cup trend to have in your corner as 18 of the last 20 (90%) ticked this stat.
Of course, most will fit the bill here, but the likes of Batal Dubai and Ingra Tor (if running) fall down.
50% Of the Last 20 Stewards’ Cup Winners Finished 1st or 2nd Last Time Out
Okay, this is only a 50% stat – so you could argue it both ways, but there are probably only a handful of runners that finished first or second last time out which will help whittle down the runners.
Including Strike Red, Apollo One and Aberama Gold.
The Last 6 Winner Carried 9-1 Or More In Weight
In recent years the key weight trend that has stood out is that the last six winners have carried 9-1 or more, suggesting that the better horses (despite having a bigger burden to carry) have done best here.
Look at the winner over the last two years – Commanche Falls – he’s now a 112-rated horse and has been running in Listed and Group races.
If this weight stat is to carry onto into a seventh year, then make 9st 1lb your weight cut-off point.

Respect Horses That Ran at Ascot, York or Newmarket Last Time
Looking back at a horses last run is another Stewards’ Cup trend to look for as a recent run at Ascot, York or Newmarket has been a great way of finding the winner with 13 of the last 20 ticking this stat.
Orazio, Apollo One, Juan Les Pins, King’s Lynn, Mums Tipple, Tajalla and Aberama Gold are just some of the runners that ran at one of these tracks last time.
Previous Track Form Has Helped in The Past
Another 50% stat in the last 20 years here as 10 of the last 20 winners of the Stewards’ Cup had tasted the West Sussex Goodwood track before.
Of the main players Orazio, Strike Red and Tiber Flow are all yet to race at Goodwood,
Horses From a Double-Figure Draw Have Done Well
With a maximum 28 runners in the race, then over the years we’d naturally have more horses coming from a double-figure draw as only 9 each season will start from a single-figure berth.
However, it’s still interesting that 78% of the last 20 winners hailed from a double-figure berth.
Stewards’ Cup Favourites Have a Good Record (Considering How Competitive The Race Is)
What about the Stewards’ Cup favourite? The market leader in the race has actually got a decent record with 30% of the last 20 winning (6 from 20), while 11 of the last 20 jollies have been placed in the race.
The Charles Hills-trained Orazio has been all the rage in the betting and will be flying the flag for the favs this year.
Respect Any Hills, Haggas, Charlton and Dods Runners
In terms of trainers to note – it’s the Charles Hills, William Haggas, Roger Charlton and Michael Dods that have fared best.
The bunch have won the race twice each in the last 20, with the Dods yard winning the last two and the Hills camp two of the last 8 – so anything they run must be respected.
Summerghand is also a horse to note as he’s a past winner of the race. No spring chicken now at 9 but returned to form the last day at York (4th) in the Sky Bet Dash and is rated 8lbs lower than that 2000 win.
