The King George Has Only Produced Two Winning 6 Year-olds Since 1951
What makes the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes special for many is that it’s a race open to 3+ year-olds – meaning we get a chance for the current years Classic generation to take on the older more established horses.
Yes, the Coral-Eclipse, which was run at the start of July, also ticks this age criteria but the King George, which is Britain’s second richest horse race to the Epsom Derby, is run over the traditional middle distance trip of 1m4f and, therefore, many feel the bigger test for the younger horses vs the older ones in this sphere.
So, being a contest that is open to all ages (barring 2 year-olds), over the years there has been a significant trend that developed.
Since the King George was staged in its current format (1951) we’ve only seen TWO winners aged 6 or older.
This means that we’ve now had 72 runnings of the King George and a massive 70 (97%) of these were won by horses aged between 3-5.
Only the classy mare Enable (2020) and the two-time winner Swain (1998) had won the King George aged 6 since 1951.
Bad News For Fancied Pair Pyledriver and Hukum
Therefore, this highlighted Ascot age stat suggests to avoid Hukum and Pyledriver as your King George tips as both horses are aged 6.
On a plus, Hukum will love the soft ground that Ascot is expecting on Saturday and being the current champ Pyledriver is going to have plenty of support too.
Both have also shown a big liking for the Ascot track during their career, but you still can’t ignore the big age trend that they will been to defy to get into the winners’ enclosure.
81% Of The Last 21 King George Winners Were Aged 3 or 4 Years-old
It’s been the horses aged 3 or 4 that have the combined best recent record – winning 17 of the last 21 renewals. This is a plus for Epsom Derby 1-2 Auguste Rodin and King Of Steel, who are both 3, while Emily Upjohn, Luxembourg and Westover are 4 year-olds.
The outsider Bolshoi Ballet is the only 5 year-old in the race this year, while the William Haggas-trained Hamish will be looking to be the oldest ever winner at the age of 7.

2023 King George Tips: Auguste Rodin A Solid Choice
One of the reasons many point to the younger horses in the King George is also the fact the 3 year-olds get a hefty 11lbs from the older runners.
With this in-mind, then one of our main King George tips for the race is this year’s Epsom Derby winner Auguste Rodin. This Aidan O’Brien runner will be looking to give his handler his fifth win in the race and after backing up is Epsom win by taking the Irish Derby comes into the race in tip-top order.
His only blot came in the 2000 Guineas earlier this season, but has bounced back since and clearly thriving now upped in trip. He’ll be looking to follow Galileo as a winner of the Epsom Derby (watch below), Irish Derby and King George in the same season.
We feel he’s got most to fear from the useful mare – Emily Upjohn, who will be the ride of Frankie Dettori.
If she can win for Frankie this will make him the most successful rider in the history of the race as he’s currently tied on 7 winners with Lester Piggott.

2023 King George Tips: Westover The Best Ascot Outsider
Of those at bigger prices last year’s Epsom Derby third Westover appeals at around 12/1. Now a 4 year-old so this Ralph Beckett runner still falls inside the key age trend and has returned this year in good order with a second in the Coronation Cup at Epsom and last time won the Group One Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in France.
Softer ground is fine for him and although it won’t be easy for him to give away 11lbs to the 3 year-olds, he’s an experienced middle distance performer now that has only been out of the first three twice from his 11 career starts.
