Saturday 29th July Frankie Dettori Ascot Rides
It’s fair to say that Dettori is in good form since his return from suspension, and has had three rides in the last week. His sole ride of the day at Newbury last Saturday was a win on Sweet Memories (5/2), before he headed to Yarmouth on Thursday for the Racing League 2023 opening night. He came second on Shahbaz (15/8) and won on Cumulonimbus (11/2) in the £100k feature race to close the evening.
- 1:50pm – 6f Princess Margaret Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies) (Class 1) (2yo) – Soprano @ 5/1
Frankie’s first ride of the day will be in the second race, and he will be aboard SOPRANO (now a non-runner). George Boughley’s handy filly won well on debut in May before finishing third at Royal Ascot last month. However, in her last race just two days ago was a beaten favourite. William Buick has been in the saddle for her first three runs, but now Dettori takes over and could have a say in the opener at Ascot on Saturday.
- 3:00pm – 7f International Stakes (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) (3yo+) – Escobar @ 20/1
The popular Italian jockey will ride again two races later and this time he’ll be hoping to steer ESCOBAR to glory. It’s the first time that Frankie will ride this horse since 2017, and is an outsider for this 25+ runner handicap. However, there is a slight hope for this David O’Meara-trained nine-year-old – Escobar is a course and distance winner and won here at the same odds of 20/1 back in October last year in the hands of Andrea Atzeni.
- 3:40pm – 1m4f King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Group 1) (Class 1) (3yo+) – Emily Upjohn @ 9/2
Up next for Frankie is the following race, and it’s the big one! The 52-year-old will saddle EMILY UPJOHN in the King George, and this Gosden mare has every chance of success. Emily Upjohn has won five out of her eight career starts, and was far from disgraced in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown earlier this month. Prior to that Sandown second behind Paddington, she won the Coronation Cup at Epsom in fine fashion, and she’s worth a bet in the King George for sure. Also, there is added incentive for this one as Frankie will aim to become the jockey with the most wins in this classic middle-distance race. He’s currently tied on seven King George wins with Lester Piggot, so will be looking for a historic eighth.

- 4:50pm – 1m Betfred Handicap (Class 2) (3yo+) – Storm Catcher @ 22/1
Finally, in Dettori’s last race of the day he will partner STORM CATCHER in the Betfred Handicap, and once again is an outside shot priced at 22/1. Simon Pearce’s gelding won on debut back in 2021, before nine races without victory. However, from December 2022 to February 2023, this five-year-old won three races on the bounce with of those wins coming at Chelmsford. It will be Storm Catcher’s first ride at Ascot, and will take a lot for him to get his head over the line first.
