Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes for a fee of around £39m, and he joins the Magpies on a five-year deal.

The 25-year-old becomes Newcastle’s third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Yankuba Minteh and Italy international Sandro Tonali.

Barnes is said to be a replacement for Saudi Arabia-bound Allan Saint-Maximin who looks to be signing for Al-Ahli.

Barnes made 187 appearances for Leicester after coming up through the ranks of their youth system, eventually becoming a key player in 2019.

He registered 45 goals and 32 assists, including an impressive return of 13 Premier League goals last season despite a poor season for the Foxes, which ended in relegation.

The winger was speaking to Newcastle’s club website.

Barnes said: “I’m delighted. It’s an amazing club and for me it’s a massive opportunity to come and be involved in a successful team that’s doing exciting things, so I’m absolutely buzzing to be here.

“I think it’s an attacker’s dream to come into a team like this; it’s high paced, it’s physically demanding, but you can see the rewards of that with the chances and the goals scored, so I think I’ll certainly suit the style.”

Eddie Howe’s side finished fourth in the Premier League last season and in 2023-24 will be playing in the Champions League for the first time since 2003-04.

Barnes is the second big sale that Leicester have made this summer following their relegation to the Championship. James Maddison departed to Tottenham last month in a £40m move.
