Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has signed a two-year deal with Ligue 1 club Lorient, just five days after being cleared of rape.

Benjamin Mendy Signs For Lorient

The left-back’s contract expired at City at the end of June, and he will now return to French football in a move to Lorient who finished 10th in Ligue 1 last season.

On Friday, Mendy was found not guilty of rape and attempted rape by a jury at Chester Crown Court.

The 29-year-old was once the Premier League‘s most expensive defender when the Cityzens paid Monaco £52m for his services in 2017. Mendy made 75 appearances for City from 2017 up until his final appearance in August 2021, which was a game against Tottenham.

He won three titles with City and was part of France’s World Cup-winning side in 2018. Mendy has 10 caps for his country and a good season could see him fight for a place in the national team ahead of next year’s Euros.

Lorient announced the signing of Mendy in a statement: “Benjamin Mendy, world champion 2018, quadruple winner of the Premier League under the colours of Manchester City and French champion of Ligue 1 with Monaco, comes to reinforce the Lorient workforce for this new season. Welcome Benjamin”.

Mendy refused to comment outside court after being cleared last week, only to say: ‘Alhamdulillah’ – an Arabic phrase meaning: ‘Praise be to God’.
