Bruno Fernandes will become the new Manchester United captain this week with Harry Maguire set to be stripped of the armband – even if he remains at Old Trafford.

Manchester United Captain: Bruno Fernandes To Take Over From Harry Maguire

The England international only made eight Premier League starts last season after falling down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag.

Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and even Luke Shaw slotting into centre back were options preferred by Ten Hag.

Fernandes stepped in as captain for most of last season in Maguire’s absence, but is now set to become the United skipper on a permanent basis.

This decision comes regardless of whether Maguire stays at the club or not, with plenty of clubs linked with a move for the ex-Leicester star.

Newcastle and Aston Villa have previously been linked with Chelsea also said to hold an interest in his services.

Maguire could be the second high-profile departure at Old Trafford this summer with David de Gea leaving after his contract expired at the end of June.

With Fernandes set to be named as the new Manchester United captain, he’ll be keen to follow up on last season’s success. While wearing the armband, Fernandes led United to Carabao Cup glory as well as the FA Cup final recording 14 goals and 15 assists in all competitions last season.
