Coral Eclipse Trends to Help You Find The 2023 Winner

Yes, this Saturday’s Sandown Group One Coral-Eclipse has a disappointing four runners, but what the race lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality. Okay, of the quartet it’s really only two of the runners that can win – Paddington and Emily Upjohn – with Dubai Honour and West Wind Blows seemingly having a bit to find on recent form.

The 2023 Coral-Eclipse betting reflects this too with the best UK bookmakers finding is hard to separate the recently Royal Ascot St James’s Palace Stakes winner Paddington and this year’s impressive Coronation Cup winner Emily Upjohn at the head of the betting.

So, to help find the winner – let’s look at the key Coral Eclipse 2023 trends to look out for and hopefully by applying these to the final runners it will help point you in the direction of Saturday’s Group One victor.

Trainers Aidan O’Brien and John Gosden Have Dominated The Coral-Eclipse In Recent Years

With six Coral-Eclipse wins under his belt, trainer Aidan O’Brien only needs one more to become the most successful handler in the history of the race. The Ballydoyle maestro is currently sharing the spoils with Sir Michael Stoute and Alec Taylor Jr, who trained 6 winners of the race between 1909 and 1923.

O’Brien’s first Eclipse winner came in 2000 with the gutsy Giant’s Causeway, with his most recent St Mark’s Basilica in 2021. He’ll be trying to add to his tally with the fast-improving Paddington, who we last saw winning the St James’s Palace Stakes in impressive fashion (watch below).

Another yard that has a fine record in the Coral-Eclipse is John Gosden – he’s mopped up four of the last 11 renewals, so another success this Saturday will see him just one adrift of O’Brien in the overall standings.

The opening Gosden winner was in 2012 with Nathaniel and he added to that with Epsom Derby hero Golden Horn in 2015. Roaring Lion in 2018 and the superstar mare Enable in 2019 were Gosden’s other Eclipse successes.

Gosden will pin his hopes on another of his useful mares in Emily Upjohn this Saturday. We last saw this 4 year-old running away with the Coronation Cup at Epsom (watch below).

81% Of The Last 21 Coral Eclipse Winners Had Raced 2+ Time That Season

Looking at one of the big Coral Eclipse trends tells us that 17 of the last 21 winners had raced at least twice that season. This is great news for Paddington with four runs (all wins), but with Emily Upjohn having only the one outing, then punters may latch onto this Sandown stat against the Gosden runner.

What Is The Best Coral Eclipse Age To Look For?

ALL of the last 21 Eclipse winners have been aged 5 or younger, but with all four runners this year ticking this stat it doesn’t tell us much.

The race, however, has seen 3 and 5 year-olds win more of their fair share – with 5 of the last 8 winners aged 3 and 6 of the last 13 aged 5.

Good news for Paddington aged 3 and Dubai Honour aged 5, but with Emily Upjohn at 4 years-old looks to have another Eclipse trend to overcome – we’ve only seen two winners aged 4 win in the last 14 runnings.

Previous Group One-Winning Form a Must

Having tasted success at the top table is another big positive to look for. Of course, both the big players – Emily Upjohn and Paddington – have this stat onside.

Paddington has won the Group One Irish 2000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes, while Emily Upjohn has the Champion Fillies and Mares and Coronation Cup as her two Group One wins.

Of the rest, Dubai Honour is also a past Group One winner, with the two wins at the highest level in Australia, but West Win Blows is yet to get his head in front at the pinnacle grade.

Winning For Over at Least 1m2f A Big Plus

Next up is the trip – the Coral-Eclipse is run over a trip of 1m2f and so having proven form over this distance is an obvious bonus.

Three of the runners – Emily Upjohn, West Wind Blows and Dubai Honour – have past winning form over at least 1m2f, but the big negative is Paddington, who is yet to win beyond a mile.

On a plus, his breeding suggests he’s more than capable of seeing out the longer trip and the way he stayed on over 1m last time in the St James’s Palace Stakes (winning by 3 3/4 lengths) was another clear sign the extra two furlongs will be within range.

What About The Records Of Jockeys Ryan Moore and William Buick?

Frankie Dettori would normally have ridden Emily Upjohn, but the Italian picked up a riding ban at Royal Ascot to rule him out of the ride. William Buick takes over for Dettori though and the great news for her backers is that Buick has won the Eclipse three times in the past and once for Gosden too (Nathaniel).

Ryan Moore will get the leg-up on Paddington and he’ll be looking for his third Eclipse win after successes back in 2007 with Notnowcato and more recently in 2021 with St Mark’s Basilica.

Coral-Eclipse Trends Verdict

The 2023 Coral-Eclipse trends tell us the two main players in the race have a fair bit going for them, but for PADDINGTON just edges it.

Yes, having not won over 1m2f+ in the past is a slight negative, but his style of wins this season have suggested he’ll be fine over the longer distance. He stayed on powerfully over 1m last time to win the St James’s Palace Stakes by 3 3/4 lengths and heads into the race rapidly improving, having won his last five.

Emily Upjohn’s proven stamina will be her big asset, but the other thing that won’t be easy for the Gosden horse is having to give 7lbs away to Paddington based on the O’Brien horse being a 3 year-old.

Paddington is also rated 123 and 3lbs higher than Emily Upjohn (120), so with the 7lbs age allowance is in theory 10lbs better off.
