Biggest Decreases in Market Value

The season gone by saw plenty of success stories, with Manchester City securing a treble, West Ham winning their first silverware since the 1980s, and Sevilla winning their seventh Europa League. However, we are looking at some of the players who perhaps didn’t quite reach the levels they have displayed in recent seasons by exploring the biggest decreases in market value over the 2022/23 campaign.

  • After exploring the biggest market value increases across the season, we are now looking at the other end of the spectrum.
  • The top 10 biggest decreases in market value are split evenly between players under 30, and those 30 or above.
  • Of the 10, six represented a Premier League side in the 2022/23 season, three in the Serie A and a single entry from Germany.

10. Federico Chiesa – Juventus

A glittering Euro-winning campaign with Italy showed just how dangerous Federico Chiesa can be, but a career constantly plagued by injuries has stunted his development.

The worst of which came in January of last year, where he limped off the pitch visibly distraught having ruptured his cruciate ligament. The now-25-year-old would go on to miss 269 days and 36 matches with Juventus.

A succession of smaller injuries throughout the rest of the season saw him ruled out for another 14 games, meaning he featured for a total of 1,483 across his 33 appearances – this amounts to around 44 minutes per game.

At 25, there is plenty of time for his career to get back on track, but the environment in a stuttering Juve side coupled with a troubling injury history are likely to hamper his development.

Market Value Decrease:  €-25m (-38.5%)

9. Andrew Robertson – Liverpool

There are several factors feeding into this drop in market value, the most pertinent being a dip in form over the past season.

This, of course, wasn’t helped by Liverpool being generally lacklustre last term, but a very poor start in which they seemed to do nothing but concede saw Robertson and the rest of the defence heavily criticised.

The Scotsman is also nearing 30, which is sure to have a bearing on the sizeable drop in value, but 11 assists across the season shows he still have plenty left in the tank.

Market Value Decrease:  €-25m (-38.5%)

8. Heung-min Son – Tottenham

Going from the Premier League Golden Boot winner in the 2021/22 season to scoring just 10 goals last term appears to have had a significant effect on Son’s market value.

A huge component of Tottenham’s Champions League qualification that year, his startling dip in form has been indicative of the team itself. However, the South Korean’s input is usually so apparent, so seeing him go missing for large chunks of the season was made that much more obvious.

No 30-years-old, it is likely his market value will only be heading in a downward trajectory from now on.

Market Value Decrease: €-25m (33.3%)

7. Mohamed Salah – Liverpool

Again, age is more than likely the driving factor behind Salah’s dip in value – Liverpool’s most potent goal threat turned 31 in June.

Although the Egyptian didn’t quite reach the staggering numbers we have come to expect, he still managed to register 19 goals and 12 assists in a season where Liverpool were under the cosh for the vast majority.

Market Value Decrease: €-25m (-27.8%)

6. Youri Tielemans – Aston Villa

Despite heavy interest from Arsenal and Manchester United last year, Youri Tielemans and Leicester opted to see out the rest of his contract.

Aston Villa moved the quickest in this window to pick him up on a free transfer, and they will be hoping to tap into what seemed to be a boundless amount of potential prior to last season.

However, the Belgian often cut a frustrated figure, having very little effect on games for Leicester as they sunk to relegation. He has all the tools to thrive in this blossoming Villa team however, and will be enthused by a talented, forward-thinking supporting cast.

Market Value Decrease: €-30m (-54.4%)

5. Romelu Lukaku – Chelsea

As of now, Romelu Lukaku belongs to Chelsea, but for how long is a different question.

A disastrous return to West London two years ago has seen his stock, and his reputation, take a huge dive after going behind the club’s back to express his desire to return to Italy in a public interview.

The now-30-year-old would get his wish, with Inter Milan agreeing to sign him on loan for the 2022/23 season, but just 10 goals in Serie A has left the Champions League finalists weighing up whether to make that deal permanent.

Market Value Decrease: €-30m (-42.9%)

4. Jadon Sancho – Manchester United

An important bid may sway Manchester United into selling one of 2021’s marquee signings, after Jadon Sancho has so far failed to set the Premier alight.

12 goals and six assists across 79 appearances is nowhere near the level United expected when they dropped £73 million on him two years ago, and although he has shown flashes of brilliance, the club are in desperate need of funds in order to facilitate new arrivals.

Erik Ten Hag may feel he can galvanise the 23-year-old after he displayed some promising moments last season, but the club may want recoup as much of their investment as possible before his value falls even further.

Market Value Decrease: €-30m (-40%)

3. Paul Pogba – Juventus

It is difficult to see where Pogba’s career goes from here.

He featured just 10 times for Juventus on his return to the Old Lady last year, which was plagued by a grand total of six injuries including a knee problem that required invasive surgery.

Although Juve managed to pick him up on a free, they will be wondering whether his £10 million-per-year contract is worth paying should his injury problems persist.

Market Value Decrease: €-33m (-68.8 %)

2. Wilfred Ndidi – Leicester

Another of Leicester’s relegated midfield, Wilfred Ndidi looks almost certain to exit the club after he was absent from training recently.

New manager Enzo Maresca has made no secret of the club’s intention to sell players who don’t want to be there, but the Foxes will only receive a cut price for the Nigerian after his market value fell by €35m last season.

A string of lacklustre performances last term saw his starting role dwindle. He is still only 26 and has plenty more to give in a more positive environment, so he is certainly one to watch out for this summer.

Market Value Decrease: €-35m (-58.3 %)

1. Sadio Mane – Bayern Munich

There was a point when people were questioning whether it was a mistake from Liverpool to sell Sadio Mane, but it is probably the player who is rueing the transfer away from Merseyside.

The Senegalese international has endured somewhat of a tough debut season at Bayern, which is perhaps best defined by a post-match punch-up with teammate Leroy Sane following their defeat to Manchester City in the Champions League.

12 goals and six assists is certainly not to be sniffed at, but for a side who were desperate for considerable firepower after the departure of Robert Lewandowski, this is far from the level required.

There are wide spread reports that a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia is on the cards after just one season back in Germany, but nothing concret as of yet.

Market Value Decrease: €-45m (-64.3 %)
