According to reports, Chelsea have offered Levi Colwill a new long-term contract at the club, however the defender wants to meet with Mauricio Pochettino in order to gain more clarity over his role in the squad.

Chelsea have reportedly offered Levi Colwill a new long-term contract at the club, in a bid to fend off transfer interest from the likes of Manchester City and Brighton.

The defender spent last term on loan with the Seagulls on the south coast, and impressed head-coach Roberto De Zerbi, so much so that the club offered £40million to sign him following the completion of his loan.

This didn’t work out for Brighton though, as Chelsea rejected the offer – making it clear that they had no intention of selling the defender.

Despite the Blues making it clear in no uncertain terms, City, as well as Liverpool and Tottenham have all been linked with a move for the 20-year-old.

And now, in an attempt to keep the defensive talent at the club long-term, the Evening Standard are reporting that the club has offered Colwill a new contract.

However, Colwill wants assurances in regards to his role within the squad as he does not want to be a back-up, and wants to meet with Mauricio Pochettino in order to discuss this.

Pochettino is known to be an admirer of Colwill, but he may struggle in being able to guarantee Colwill a starting berth next term.

With the likes of Thiago Silva, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah all on the books at the club – Chelsea are already stacked in the centre-back position, which creates a major dilemma for the Blues’ new boss.

Colwill has already received international recognition, despite not making an appearance for Chelsea as of yet.

He was promoted to Gareth Southgate’s senior England national side for their most recent qualifying matches, but failed to make an appearance.
