One of Lionel Messi’s former managers has joined the Argentine in making the switch to Inter Miami this summer, as Gerardo Martino has been named as new boss of the MLS side.

Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino will replace Phil Neville as manager of Inter Miami this season, which will see him coach Lionel Messi one final time in his career.

Martino has already managed Messi at Barcelona, with the 60-year-old taking charge of the Spanish giants in 2013-14 when they finished second in La Liga.

Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham said: ‘Tata is a highly respected figure in our sport whose track record speaks for itself.

‘We are confident that his achievements in the game and experience as a head coach will inspire our team and excite our fans and look forward to seeing the impact he will have on and off the field.’

Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas added: ‘We are very happy to be able to welcome Tata to Inter Miami. We feel he is a coach who matches our ambitions as a club and we’re optimistic about what we can accomplish together.

‘Tata has coached at the highest levels and we believe that experience will be hugely beneficial to us as we aim to compete for titles here.’

Martino will not just be coaching one former player however, as Sergio Busquets is also set to transfer to the MLS this season.

While Messi and Busquets are both confirmed and only need to be announced as players, Jordi Alba could also be joining his former teammates this summer with the fullback reportedly interested in a move.

Messi is set to make his debut for Inter Miami at the end of July, as the MLS prepares for the most highly anticipated game in its history so far.
