Arsenal are set to make an improved bid for Ajax defender Jurrien Timber in the coming days, after the Gunners’ first bid of £30m was rejected last week.

Mikel Arteta may have to battle it out with Manchester City for Declan Rice this summer, but the Arsenal boss is also keen on bringing Ajax defender Jurrien Timber to the Emirates this season.

The Gunners made an initial bid said to be worth around £30m to Ajax last week, with their offer immediately rejected by the Dutch side.

However Arsenal are reportedly planning their second bid for Timber this week, with an offer in the region of £50m expected to be submit in the next few days.

Personal terms are reportedly not a problem for the Dutch defender, as Timber is eager for a move to the Premier League next season.

The versatile 22-year-old defender started all 34 matches in Ajax’s Eredivise season last year and could become an important rotation player in the Arsenal squad.

Arsenal defender William Saliba was a huge miss towards the end of last season, as the centre back struggled with an injury that kept him out for the last ten weeks of the season.

The Gunners are expected to spend over £200m this summer, as Mikel Arteta prepares for a return to the Champions League next season.
