Manchester United have reportedly stepped up their pursuit of Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana ahead of the expected departure of long-time servant David De Gea this summer.

According to various reports in Italy, United have intensified talks with Inter to sign Onana – who worked with Erik ten Hag during his time at Ajax, making 145 appearances under the Dutchman.

David De Gea’s contract at the club has now expired and it’s expected he’ll move on this summer, with various offers from the Saudi Pro League to consider for the Spaniard.

A fee for Onana is likely to be around the £50m mark and many Manchester United fans are keen to add the Cameroonian, a Champions League finalist earlier this year.

As per The Athletic, despite the expectation that De Gea will leave, he and the club are still considering their respective options and there’s every chance he could return for another season at Old Trafford.

The 32-year-old joined United from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and has been at the club for 12 years, winning a handful of honours such as the Premier League, two League Cups, an FA Cup and a Europa League title.

De Gea has shown he is generally incapable of playing the ball out from the back and Erik ten Hag is seeking a different style of player to sit between the sticks.

Onana departed Ajax and signed for Inter on a free transfer last year, but has a contract in place until 2027 and it won’t be easy to pry him from the Italian giants.
