James Milner, whose switch from Liverpool to Brighton was made official ahead of the new season, stands on the verge of history with the all-time Premier League appearances record well within reach.
- Gareth Barry’s all-time Premier League appearances record stands at 652.
- James Milner needs to register just 34 appearances for new club Brighton in order to break it.
- The earliest he could surpass Barry’s record is the game week beginning April 20th, 2024 when Brighton face Chelsea. This is providing he features in all of the Seagulls’ fixtures up to that point.
An overwhelmingly successful chapter at Liverpool, the club where he has spent the largest portion of his career, came to an end as the referee blew the whistle at St Mary’s on the final day.
The 37-year-old played a vital role in one of Liverpool’s most trophy-laden period, helping them to a Champions League triumph in 2019 before going on to lift the club’s first league title in three decades in 2020.
Adding a domestic cup double in his penultimate season means Jurgen Klopp’s jack-of-all-trades collected a clean sweep of trophies during his time with the Reds.
And now, as he prepares to make Brighton his sixth career destination, he stands on the cusp of breaking Gareth Barry’s all-time Premier League appearances record.
Fans should be fully expectant to see him achieve that feat given his dedication to fitness and conditioning.
Having garnered a reputation for being the fittest player at Liverpool, he more than backed that claim up in last summer’s pre-season, where he ran 8.5km in just 34 minutes. For reference, the average for a male is between 45 minutes to an hour.
Speaking to GOAL in 2020, now-former teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold said: “We are a fit team, there are a lot of players who have great engines.
“But Milly [Milner], I don’t think I’ll ever see anyone as fit as him.
In order to surpass Gareth Barry’s record of 652 appearances, Milner will need to feature in 34 out of a possible 38 games for the Seagulls next season.
First and foremost, he can jump ahead of second-placed Ryan Giggs (632) with just 14 more appearances, but the overall record is certainly well within reach given he featured 31 times as a bit-part player for Liverpool in the season gone by.
