The Netherlands have been forced into a change just before the start of the World Cup of Darts after Michael van Gerwen was forced to withdraw from the competition for a second successive year.

Unfortunately for the Dutch, Michael van Gerwen has been forced to withdraw from the World Cup of Darts ahead of its commencement in Frankfurt this weekend.

The 34-year-old was due to play alongside Danny Noppert, but after undergoing surgery on his teeth on Monday, he has failed to recover in time for the tournament.

Van Gerwen will be replaced by Dirk van Duijvenbode for a second consecutive year as the Aubergenius is the second highest-ranked Dutch player on the PDC Order of Merit.

It was a similar story in 2022 for Van Gerwen, as he missed out on last year’s edition of the tournament due to surgery too. That time however, it was due to him being treated for carpal tunnel syndrome.

Due to the Dutch lineup change, they now drop down to third seeds in the tournament, as Wales’ Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton are lifted up to second seeds.

The tournament will kickstart on Thursday, June 15, with the seeded countries entering in the second round of the competition on Saturday.
