Zlatan Ibrahimovic has announced his retirement from football at the age of 41, after an illustrious career with some of Europe’s top teams.

The AC Milan striker’s contract expires with the Italian side at the end of the season, but after struggling all year with injuries the Swedish legend has decided to retire.

Ibrahimovic scored 511 goals in 866 club games, as well as 62 in 122 for his country to make him an icon at both club and international level.

Zlatan bid farewell to the sport on Sunday afternoon after AC Milan’s final match of the season, as the 41-year-old addressed the San Siro one last time.

“I have many memories and many emotions in here,” the Sweden international said.

“The first time I arrived here you gave me happiness. The second time, love. I will be a Milan fan for life.”

Ibrahimovic made just four appearances for Milan this season, with injuries plaguing the striker late in his career.

“I want to thank my family and everyone close to me for their patience. I want to thank my second family, the players. I want to thank [Stefano] Pioli and his staff for the responsibility you have given me. I want to thank the managers for the opportunity.

“The time has come to say goodbye to football, but not to you. See you around, if you’re lucky. Forza Milan and goodbye.”

Fans displayed a fitting ‘Godbye’ tifo in the crowd before the Verona match on Sunday and Raphael Leao celebrated both of his goals with Ibrahimovic during Milan’s 3-1.
