After edging past Bournemouth at Goodison Park, Everton have retained their Premier League status for another season, condemning Leicester City and Leeds United to relegation down to the Championship.

Everton knew that a victory would ensure their Premier League survival ahead of their clash this afternoon, but it wasn’t quite as simple as that.

Unlikely survivors Leeds looked to have fallen out the race early on. Harry Kane put Tottenham ahead after just two minutes at Elland Road.

Harvey Barnes was on form for Leicester, netting his 13th goal of the season after a lovely one-two with Kelechi Iheanacho. This saw the Foxes move out of the relegation zone, with Everton moving into the drop zone in their place.

This is how it stayed at the midway point in all of the matches, with Leicester looking likeliest of the three to survive.

Leeds conceded a second just two minutes into the second half – all but confirming their relegation to the Championship.

It became almost a two-horse race from this point onwards, with Everton desperately searching for that crucial opener.

And that’s exactly what they got on the 57 minute mark. Abdoulaye Doucoure’s deflected volley saw Mark Travers at a standstill, handing the Toffees an almighty lead – seeing them move back out of the bottom three.

A spirited fightback from Bournemouth didn’t quite cut it, with the Merseyside club clinging onto their one goal lead right until the final whistle.

It clearly wasn’t to be for Leicester, as the 2015/16 Premier League champions’ relegation was confirmed following the culmination of Everton’s match, despite the Foxes doing their bit – beating West Ham 2-1 at the King Power.

Leeds’ drop to the second tier of English football was also confirmed, after they were defeated 4-1 at the hands of Spurs.

It is now confirmed that Leicester, Leeds and Southampton will be replaced by Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton in the Premier League for the 2023/24 season.
