Granit Xhaka will leave Arsenal at the end of the season after seven years at the club and Bayer Leverkusen are in advanced talks to sign the midfielder.

The 30-year-old’s contract at the Emirates expires in June 2024, and there are no plans to negotiate an extension.

Leverkusen are in pole position to sign Xhaka and are in the process of completing a £13m deal.

The Switzerland international played a major role in Arsenal’s title push this season, and has started in 34 Premier League games and coming off the bench in another.

Arteta was speaking about Xhaka last week and said: “probably the best season he has had at the club”.

Xhaka has certainly had ups and downs at the club and in his seven years in North London, he has won two FA Cups – one under Arsene Wenger in 2017 and one under Arteta in 2020.

The Swiss midfielder is reportedly set to pen a four-year deal at Leverkusen in a return to German football. He played in the Bundesliga before signing for the Gunners from Borussia Mönchengladbach in a £35m deal back in 2016.

Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is an admirer of Xhaka and is looking for a leader to join his side. The Spaniard has transformed them since taking over earlier on this season. He has Leverkusen in the Europa League semi-finals and has them sitting in seventh in the league.
