Tony Calvin Chester Tips For Wednesday 10th May 23
- 2:40pm – Weatherby Digital Solutions Cheshire Oaks (Listed Race) (Class 1) (3yo) 1m 3 1/2f ITV: SAVETHELASTDANCE @ 8/11
Tony Calvin’s first tip on Wednesday at Chester on Day 1 of the Boodles May Festival, comes in the Cheshire Oaks in the form of the Aidan O’Brien-trained SAVETHELASTDANCE.
Aidan O’Brien had four in the Cheshire Oaks at the five-day stage and he relies on Savethelastdance – ridden by jockey Ryan Moore – for a race he has won in four of the last seven years.
And this looked a filly potentially destined for top honours (like her Group 1 winning parents) when winning over 1m2f at Leopardstown on her return.
Calvin find it hard to be dogmatic in a field of similarly unexposed 3yo fillies (well, a few of these anyway) but O’Brien will surely be sulking big-style if his filly doesn’t win this. Ralph Beckett’s Luckin Brew, the 11/2 second favourite and mount of Frankie Dettori, could be her main rival.
- 3:45pm – Camden Pale Handicap (Class 3) (Class 1) (3yo) 6f ITV: KING’S CROWN @ 12/1
Despite being dismissive of this six furlong handicap, Tony Calvin does have one relative fancy in the form of KING’S CROWN for trainer Adrian Nicholls.
King’s Crown did run very well on his return when fifth at Newmarket last month and the handicapper dropped him 1lb for it, which is generous considering the second and third came out and won at the Guineas meeting.
Calvin feels you can maybe mark up that run as well as he raced prominently, and the first three home all came from off the pace. A mark of 82 looks very exploitable, then.
