Arsenal kept the pressure firmly on Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table on Sunday, with a 2-0 win over Newcastle in a feisty affair at St James Park.

The hosts got off to a quick start and Jacob Murphy hit the post after just over a minute with Aaron Ramsdale beat in the Arsenal goal.

It was the visitors who took the lead however and Martin Odegaard scored his third goal in his last two matches with a low driven shot from well outside the area.

The strike gave Arsenal an early lead against the run of play and the Gunners didn’t look back from there, as they picked up momentum rapidly through the rest of the half.

Odegaard’s 15th goal of the season gave the visitors a cushion going into half time and after a few flared tempers just before the break, the players headed down the tunnel with Arsenal leading 1-0.

Newcastle started the second half similarly to the first and came out flying, however Arsenal doubled their advantage with just 20 minutes left to play through a deflected Gabriel Martinelli cross.

Arsenal’s top goalscorer took on Kieran Trippier down the wing and as he cut his cross back towards Gabriel Jesus, Fabian Schar deflected the ball into his own net to make it 2-0 to the Gunners.

The 2-0 win for Arsenal means that the gap to Manchester City at the top of the Premier League has been reduced back down to one point again and the pressure is back on the Citizens who face Everton next Sunday.

With a win on Sunday, Arsenal’s title odds took a slight shift in the market and the Gunners are now priced at 7/1 to win the Premier League this season.
