Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Kevin De Bruyne will play against Leeds on Saturday afternoon if he can pass a fitness test.

De Bruyne hasn’t featured for the Sky Blues since the emphatic 4-1 win over Arsenal, missing victories over Fulham and West Ham with ‘niggles’.

The Belgian was substituted during the game and asked to be brought off. He missed the following game at Craven Cottage despite Guardiola declaring a fit squad bar Nathan Ake.

When asked about the midfielder’s status for the clash at the Etihad Stadium, Guardiola said:

“He trained yesterday, he trained good. Today we are going to train and decide. If he’s fit, he plays.”

On Tuesday, the Spaniard confirmed that De Bruyne hadn’t trained with the first-team squad ahead of Wednesday’s 3-0 win against West Ham.

However, the 31-year-old looks to be firmly on the road to recovery and ready to return to the field.

The 31-year-old leads the Premier League in assists this season (16) by a landslide, five clear of Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka (11) in second and Leandro Trossard (10) in third.

De Bruyne is the key piece of Guardiola’s system which could see the Citizens become the first treble winners (Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup) since Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in 1999.

City are also in line to win a third consecutive Premier League crown, which has only been achieved by one club – Manchester United – on two separate occasions (1999-2001 and 2007-2009).
