David and Nicola Barron’s five-year-old BERT KIBBLER is a four-time winner on the all-weather and although yet to score on turf, progeny of his sire Fountain Of Youth tend to perform much better on grass than on synthetics. He disappointed when a well-backed 11-2 favourite for a 5f Musselburgh handicap on his latest outing but looked ill at ease on the rain softened ground and, after being ridden early to keep up with a strong pace, he faded close home to finish tenth of 16. That effort is safely ignored and the forecast quicker ground will suit. Gianluca Sanna takes the reigns, claiming a valuable 7lb, and Bert Kibbler could be in receipt of an easy lead. CHELMSFORD 8.45
SIR OLIVER was narrowly denied when a 20-1 second of a 11 in a 34k sprint handicap at Lingfield last time, failing by a neck to reel in all-the-way winner Emperors Spirit. That took his record in fields of ten or more runners to 0-16, compared to eight wins from 21 starts (38.1% strike rate) in single-digit line-ups. He’s won four of his five starts when faced with five or fewer rivals and he has just three to contend with tonight. Regular partner Stefano Cherchi takes the ride and may be able to outmanoeuvre his three rivals in what could be a tactical affair.
