JJ Watt, who spent near-enough the entirety of his iconic NFL career at the Houston Texans, has announced his latest venture on social media which sees him and his wife confirm their minority investment in Burnley.
The timing could not have been better for JJ Watt and his wife Kealia, who have been in the UK recently watching Burnley secure the Championship title and their immediate promotion back to the Premier League.
Although the extent of their investment is unclear at this moment in time, NFL and football fans alike have been quick to liken the news to Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s hugely successful joint-venture at Wrexham.
Watt, who is a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and his wife who is also a former football player having previously represented the US Women’s team, were quick to distance themselves from the comparisons in their announcement video.
However, the pair could not contain their excitement as they expressed their gratitude at being able to invest in a club steeped in history, and added that the investment is as much in the community as it is in the sport itself.
“When you invest in a club that’s been around since 1882, you must have great respect for its history and tradition.
“We understand that not only are we investing in the squad and manager, we’re investing in the town and its people. We take that responsibility very seriously and intend to work hard in earning their trust and support.”
I’m officially retiring from retirement.

JJ Watt pulled the curtain down on an illustrious career in the NFL, which ended with a season-long stint with the Arizona Cardinals following nine years in Texas.
A Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in 2017, he also has a long history of philanthropic endeavours, including establishing the Justin J. Watt Foundation which supports the development of young athletes.
Kealia Watt, who played professional football in the States, also added that she hopes she can apply her experiences to developing the club’s women’s side.
She said: “In the US, I’ve seen the NWSL grow into something really incredible, and we’d love to be a part of growing the women’s team here and be a part of their journey.”
