- 4:25 – Palmerstown House Pat Taaffe Handicap Chase (Grade B) (5yo+ 0-150) 3m RTE1: FLEGMATIK @ 7/1
The Dan Skelton yard send over this 8 year-old and Kevin Blake feels he’s got a great chance of heading back to the UK with the prize.
Last seen running a close second in the Coral Trophy at Kempton in February, the horse has been kept fresh since and with that last run coming in the first-time cheekpieces it’s good to see them on again here.
Is up just 2lbs for that run and has run well fresh in the past.
Blake told his Betfair followers – “Having been given a patient ride in a well-run race, Flegmatik made very eye-catching headway to track the leader on the turn into the straight. He was going so well that his rider elected to let him hit the front at the third-last fence. He looked sure to win from there, but slightly messy jumps at the final two obstacles coupled with how long he had been in front gave Our Power a window of opportunity and he duly seized it to run down Flegmatik by a neck.”
- 5:00 – Ballymore Champion Four Year Old Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo) 2m RTE1: NUSRET (e/w) @ 20/1
With strong links into the Joseph O’Brien yard, it’s interesting that Kevin Blake is siding for one of his runners here in Nusret.
This 4 year-old is a two-time winner over hurdles and is yet to finish out of the first three from his 5 runs over the sticks. He ran well to be third in the 4-Y-O Anniversary Juvenile Hurdle at Aintree last time out and ran on well that day to suggest there is more to come.
He’s a course and distance winner here at Punchestown too, plus Blake feels the drying ground and the return to a right-handed track will suit.
Blake told his Betfair readers. “He meets a smaller field here and there is no guarantee that the pace will be better than average, but he shouldn’t end up as far out of his ground with less rivals to contend with. It wouldn’t surprise to see him show improved form and run a big race.”
