Champions League qualification slipping away; two managerial exits in the second half of the season; a 6-1 drubbing at the hands of Newcastle last time out – the turmoil in North London refuses to subside. As they prepare to bounce back against Manchester United this evening, we are putting Ryan Mason’s Tottenham record as interim manager under the microscope, to see whether he can galvanise a squad severely lacking in confidence.
Ryan Mason’s Tottenham Record
Cristian Stellini’s departure was yet another blemish on an ugly season for Tottenham, who were pegged as potential title challengers after a storming finish under Antonio Conte last year.
Fast-forward to now, they have seen a trio of Italians exit the club, including sporting director Fabio Paratici who is under investigation by FIFA for charges of false accounting whilst working at Juventus.
With six games remaining to try and rectify their past transgressions, the mantle is passed once again to loyal servant Ryan Mason, who is all too familiar with guiding Spurs during times of uncertainty.
Having represented the club as a player only to have his career cut short by a horrific head injury, he was named as part of Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff, which would lead to him steadying the ship as interim manager after the ‘Special One’s’ toxic stint was cut short.

And now, he must attempt to do the same in the face of overwhelming adversity, off the back of one of the darkest days in the club’s history.
Let’s take a look at how he fared last time:
- 21/04/21 – Tottenham 2 – 1 Southampton (Premier League)
- 25/04/21 – Manchester City 1 – 0 Tottenham (Carabao Cup)
- 02/05/21 – Tottenham 4 – 0 Sheffield United (Premier League)
- 08/05/21 – Leeds 3 – 1 Tottenham (Premier League)
- 16/05/21 – Tottenham 2 – 0 Wolves (Premier League)
- 19/05/21 – Tottenham 1 – 2 Aston Villa (Premier League)
- 23/05/21 – Leicester 2 – 4 Tottenham (Premier League)
Four wins from seven is a respectable return for a side who were drained from the negativity Mourinho created, much like Conte’s gloomy perspective of the club’s ambitions.
This current Spurs cohort are indicative of modern football – no longer will players respond to hardline, tough love management.
Daniel Levy will need to bring in someone who can nurture a squad that has been neglected by successive managers, and Ryan Mason, although not the first choice for the permanent role, can begin rebuilding that feel-good factor this evening with a positive result against United.
On the horizon, there are some significant stumbling blocks for Mason to navigate, namely a trip to Anfield on Sunday, before facing Aston Villa, Brentford and a Leeds side fighting for their survival.
