Liverpool went to the London Stadium needing a victory to keep the pressure on Newcastle United and Manchester United in the hunt for the final Champions League spots.
Despite their need to win, they got off to a poor start. Lucas Paquetá scored for the Hammers in the 12th minute. The Brazilian weaved his way through the defence, playing a one-two with Michail Antonio before smashing home his third goal in as many games.

Jürgen Klopp’s men reacted quickly. Cody Gakpo scored just six minutes later to level the scoring on the night. The Dutchmen struck from outside the box.
It was an unlikely hero who scored the second goal that claimed all three points. Joel Matip towered above the rest of the field to score the final goal of the game and claim all three points.

Liverpool have made their Champions League qualification difficult this Premier League campaign. It looked at one point in the season they might fail to qualify for Europe altogether. However, Klopp’s team regrouped and have mounted a challenge for the Champions League.
Despite their good run of late, Liverpool’s fate isn’t in their hands. They’ve played two more games than fourth place Manchester United and one more game than Newcastle United who are third. Not only that, they’re six points off both those two. They need results to go their way to stand a chance of playing in the Champions League.
