Arsenal’s hopes of securing a 14th Premier League title have been crushed following an electric 3-3 draw to relegation battling Southampton at the Emirates.

Friday night football in north London took a surprising turn after 29 seconds when Carlos Alcaraz pounced on Aaron Ramsdale’s misplaced pass to open the scoring for the visitors.

13 minutes later, former Gunners winger Theo Walcott doubled Southampton’s lead before Gabriel Martinelli grabbed one back for Arsenal and put the hosts back in the game.

Duje Caleta-Car scored the Saints’ third goal after 66 minutes with a free header at the back post leaving Oleksandr Zinchenko red-faced on a nightmare evening for the league leaders.

Skipper Martin Odegaard brought hope for the home crowd after 87 minutes and Mikel Arteta’s side levelled the score at 3-3 through Bukayo Saka on the stroke of injury time.

Arsenal will be happy to have fought back from two goals down to earn a point, but many will see this as two points dropped in the title race with Manchester City just five points adrift with two games in hand.

According to Premier League betting sites, Arsenal are now underdogs at 7/2 to win the title compared to Manchester City who lead the way at 1/5.

The pair of frontrunners are due to meet next Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium in a showdown which is likely to decide which way the Premier League crown is headed on the final day of the season.

After being knocked out of the EFL Cup, FA Cup and Europa League, the league title remained Arsenal’s last hope of winning silverware in 2023 but Arteta’s men face an uphill challenge.
