According to talkSPORT, Southampton have informed James Ward-Prowse that he can leave this summer if the club is relegated.

This comes amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur, as well as Aston Villa, West Ham and Newcastle United. Manchester United have also been rumoured to hold an interest in the Englishman.

Ward-Prowse has cemented himself as a top Premier League midfielder, but now looks set to leave in the summer with the Saints sitting in last place in the table.

Coming through the academy and into the first team, Ward-Prowse has been with the south coast club since 2003.

But despite having emotional connections to the club, the prospect of playing in the Championship will likely ensure his departure.

Southampton’s relegation isn’t yet confirmed, but whilst four points adrift from safety with just seven games to go – Premier League survival looks unlikely.

The 28-year-old has featured 38 times for Saints this term, scoring nine goals and assisting three.

He’s lived up to his tag of being a set-piece specialist this season too, converting from free-kicks on several occasions – perhaps most memorably against Chelsea.

The stunning effort at Stamford Bridge saw him edge even closer to equalling David Beckham’s Premier League free-kick record.

Ward-Prowse is now just one direct free-kick goal away from equalling Beckham’s tally of 18.

Whether he achieves that feat this season still remains to be seen, but his stay in England’s top-flight looks set to be extended beyond the summer – with or without Southampton.
