Although the Magpies are supported by the wealthiest club owners in world football, they have remained relatively cautious since the Saudi-backed takeover in October 2021.

Having inherited a squad on its knees, their total transfer sum currently stands at £250m having invested in sought-after talents such as Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and Sven Botman, all the while selling just one player, Chris Wood, for £35m.

There are of course limits to what the club can achieve within the boundaries of Financial Fair Play, but with Champions League football on the horizon for the first time in nearly two decades, the hierarchy are hopeful of a sizeable cash injection – teams can expect to receive £13.48m alone for group stage qualification, along with various sponsorships and broadcasting deals.

According to the Telegraph, director of football Dan Ashworth has managed to persuade the owners into accelerating their spending this summer given the staggering rate of progress at St James’ Park since their arrival.

It also goes on to reveal an ambitious shortlist, with the club eager to bring in at least four ‘elite’ players in order to cement themselves as a team who can compete for trophies and European football on a consistent basis.

Among the names listed are thought to be a collection of Premier League players – these include; James Maddison, Moises Caicedo, Conor Gallagher, Ivan Toney, Kaoru Mitoma, Kavlin Phillips, Jarrod Bowen, Declan Rice, Scott McTominay, Harvey Barnes and Kieran Tierney.

They have also set their sights on a number of talents across Europe, with Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marcus Thuram, Celta Vigo’s Gabri Veiga, Bayer Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby all among the realistic targets, while they are also said to be considering a widely ambitious double swoop for sought-after Napoli duo Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Victor Osimhen.

Despite a heavy defeat at the hands of Aston Villa last time out, Eddie Howe’s men remain comfortably in the top four, and hold a three-point lead and a game in hand over fifth-placed Tottenham.
