Reports from Germany have confirmed that Manchester United have opened talks with Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong.

Respected Bundesliga journalist Florian Plettenberg has said that the Red Devils have opened talks with Frimpong’s agent Jeffrey Lemmert.

United were previously linked to Frimpong in January, but were unable to strike a deal mid-season.

The 22-year-old is enjoying a stellar season in Germany, scoring eight goals and assisting nine times from the right-back position.

Erik ten Hag is said to be very interested in the Dutchman, as the Red Devils look to offload Aaron Wan-Bissaka and provide competition for Diogo Dalot.

Frimpong has previous links to the city of Manchester too. The defender came through the Manchester City academy, before moving up north to Celtic, and then over to Germany with Bayer Leverkusen.

He became a fan favourite over the course of two seasons with Glasgow’s Green and White. During his time at Celtic Park, Frimpong secured a treble of trophies in 2019/20.

Though he has yet to make his debut for the Netherlands, Frimpong was included in Louis van Gaal’s final squad for the most recent World Cup in Qatar.

Transfermarkt value Frimpong at around £35 million, with his contract with Leverkusen running until the summer of 2025.
