Former Premier League striker Dean Saunders has criticised Chelsea owner Todd Boehly by likening his ways of running the club to that of ‘Football Manager’ following the sacking of head coach Graham Potter.

Following a 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon, Chelsea confirmed the sacking of head coach Graham Potter.

Despite only being appointed in September, on a five-year contract, the Englishman saw his tenure at the helm of Chelsea cut short following a string of poor results.

In a statement on Sunday afternoon, the club confirmed his departure.

“On behalf of everyone at the club, we want to thank Graham sincerely for his contribution to Chelsea,” said co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.

“We have the highest degree of respect for Graham as a coach and as a person. He has always conducted himself with professionalism and integrity and we are all disappointed in this outcome.”

The club have since established that Bruno Saltor will take over as interim head coach, as the Blues look ahead to a Champions League quarter-final clash against Real Madrid.

Not everyone is impressed with the decision however. Former Welsh international and Premier League striker Dean Saunders has cited Todd Boehly as the issue, claiming his ownership style is similar to that of an ownership of a ‘Football Manager’ team.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Saunders criticised Boehly’s ownership style.

“Todd Boehly, for me, is playing Football Manager,” Saunders said.

“He doesn’t know anything about football, and he thinks ‘if a player is in the news and Arsenal are after him, we’ll go sign him’,

“They’ve signed eight players and I’m sure Graham Potter didn’t want all of them players.”

Saunders continued on Chelsea’s transfer dealings.

“You’ve spent £300 million and don’t sign a striker, not the smartest thing I’ve ever seen.

“Chelsea don’t have a poacher.”
