Newcastle United ran out 2-0 victors against Manchester United in today’s Super Sunday clash, impacting the bookies odds for Top Four qualification.

The hosts started the match superbly and were dominant for the majority of the half. Joe Willock had the best chance to open the scoring but his six-yard effort flew over the bar.

Erik ten Hag’s side had their moments as the first-half drew to a close, with Brazilian winger Anthony being a constant thorn in the Magpies’ side.

Both sides went into the break goalless and for the first time this season Manchester United failed to have a shot on target in the first half.

It was more of the same in the second-half with Newcastle dominating large spells of the match, however Anthony did manage to register United’s first shot on target but failed to trouble Nick Pope.

Eddie Howe’s side took the lead on the 65th minute mark, some good work from Bruno Guimaraes led to Allan Saint-Maximin finding Joe Willock, who headed the ball home.

The Red Devils looked for an equaliser with Marcel Sabitzer coming close, but the hosts doubled their lead as Callum Wilson headed home from Kieran Trippier’s corner.

Manchester United failed to score for a third consecutive league match and moved down to fourth in the Premier League.

Who Will Qualify For The Champions League?

Today’s result has had significant repercussions in the Top Four battle, with United now dropping down to fourth. Erik ten Hag has been quoted saying ‘every game is a cup final’ and as his side are still competing in every competition, he may be right.

The Red Devils’ next Premier League fixture will be crucial, as they welcome Brentford to Old Trafford this Wednesday. The Bees handed United their second-heaviest defeat of the season back in August, winning 4-0 in a historic first-half display.

For Newcastle it’s a very joyous day, they now sit in third and could be three points clear off fifth if Everton beat Spurs tomorrow night. Champions League football would be a huge achievement for the club and they’re in good stead to qualify.

Eddie Howe’s side travel to the capital for their next league fixture, taking on West Ham in another difficult battle. The Hammers moved out of the relegation zone earlier today after beating Southampton 1-0 and David Moyes will be looking to build on the result.
