England and Italy know each other very well, as this evening’s fixture will be the fourth time that they have faced off in the last two years.
It’s quite a rarity in international football for nations to play eachother so often, but having been drawn in the same European Championship qualifying group – they must face eachother another two times.
All eyes will be on this evening’s Group C opener, as Italy and England look to get their qualifying campaign off to a strong start.

Across the 30 games played between the pair, Italy have won 13, England have won 8, and 9 draws make up the remainder of the results.
The first meeting came in a friendly in May 1933, where they played out a 1-1 stalemate in Rome.

Last time out, in September of last year, the Azzurri edged the Three Lions by one goal out in Milan. Napoli’s Giacomo Raspadori was the scorer that evening, confirming England’s Nations League relegation to League B, whilst equalling their record of their worst run of form in eight years
In the reverse fixture at Wembley it was a better performance from Gareth Southgate’s side, but with no reward at the end of it. England dominated the majority of possession, as well as the efforts on goal, but couldn’t fashion a winner with Tammy Abraham leading the line.
Prior to this, one of Italy and England’s most iconic matches took place, in the EURO 2020 final. It started so well for Southgate’s men, with Luke Shaw breaking the deadlock after a mere two minutes, before Leonardo Bonucci’s second-half header sent the pair to extra-time. A further goalless 30 minutes meant that the title would be decided by spot kicks. The Italians were victorious, winning 3-2 on penalties, as Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka missed England’s final three penalties.
Two 1-1 draws came ahead of the European Championship final. In the most recent one Jamie Vardy and Lorenzo Insigne were on the scoresheet, as Graziano Pelle and Andros Townsend netted in the 2015 faceoff.
