Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy has slammed former Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil, labelling the German as “lazy and overrated” following his retirement from football yesterday.

After 18 years in senior football, German World Cup winner Mesut Ozil has announced his retirement from football.

The 34-year-old is widely remembered for his success in providing assists, most memorably for Germany, Arsenal and Real Madrid.

Premier League fans will mostly remember him from his time with the Gunners, of course.

Ozil joined Arsenal from Real Madrid back in 2013 for around £42.5 million, a deal that made him the most expensive German player ever.

During his time at the Emirates he recorded 254 appearances, 44 goals and 79 assists.

He also helped them to four FA Cup titles under legendary boss Arsene Wenger and Mikel Arteta.

Following his retirement from football, messages of support were widespread with memories shared of some of his greatest moments.

Not everyone had fond memories of the midfielder, however, with former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy opting to slam the former Arsenal man.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Cundy described Ozil as “lazy and overrated”.

“He was lazy and overrated at Arsenal,” Cundy said.

“Honestly, I’ve never seen a player with so much talent be so underwhelming. Arsenal fans used to love him, they’re fanboys. I called him [out] years ago, saying there’s something missing about his game.”

He was then asked if he preferred Ozil or Martin Odegaard, to which he responded by saying that that shouldn’t even be a question.

“Oh mate, honestly, don’t [even start]. That’s not even a conversation. Odegaard makes things happen. I’ve binned him because Ozil, for me, is a luxury player.”
