Nick Luck Cheltenham Tips on Day 4: Protektorat To Strike Gold
RacingTV presenter Nick Luck runs his expert eye over the final day of the Festival as he gives his Cheltenham tips on Friday – Gold Cup Day.
-
1.30: JCB Triumph Hurdle ITV1: BLOOD DESTINY
Willie Mullins holds a strong hand in this race with Lossiemouth and Gala Marceau, but Nick Luck is opting for their other runner – Blood Destiny. This 4 year-old has won 2 of his three hurdles starts and has been kept fresh for this by missing the Dublin Racing Festival.
-
2.10: McCoy Contractors County Handicap Hurdle ITV1: PEMBROKE
The Dan Skelton yard have a good record in this race – winning it three times since 2016. They another leading chance with Pembroke, who we last saw running a cracking second here at Cheltenham on Trials Day at the end of January.
-
2.50: Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle ITV1: LETSBECLEARABOUTIT & STAY AWAY FAY
Nick Luck is firing a few bigger-priced bullets at the Albert Bartlett. Letsbeclearaboutit comes from the Irish yard of Gavin Cromwell and could not have been more impressive last time – winning by 22 lengths. This is harder, but he looks fair value. Stay Away Fay is from the Paul Nicholls yard and looks to be going the right way after a fair second at Doncaster last time.
-
3.30: Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase ITV1: PROTEKTORAT
Nick Luck is value-hunting in the Gold Cup and is taking on the favourite Galopin Des Champs, with the Dan Skelton runner Protektorat. The horse has been a bit or miss this season but on his day is a very decent staying chaser. He’s also only rated 3lbs inferior to the favourite but is much the bigger price.
-
4.10: St. James’s Place Festival Challenge Cup Open Hunters’ Chase ITV1: THE STORYTELLER
More often than not the better jockeys win this race and Nicky Luck is homing in on that again here with the Jamie Codd-ridden The Storyteller. This Gordon Elliott runner is a past Festival winner and is also the top-rated in the field.
-
4.50: Mares’ Chase RTV: IMPERVIOUS
The Mares’ Chase this year looks a two-horse battle with Impervious and Allegorie De Vassy the two to fight this out. The former is the one Nicky Luck is siding with for owner JP McManus. This 7 year-old has won all three of her starts over fences. Therefore, if bringing that form to the table Luck thinks Impervious will be hard to beat.
-
5.30: Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle RTV: IROKO
This last race is another that JP McManus like to target – he’s got a few in it, but Luck feels his Iroko is the one to be with. Has won his last two in good fashion and should be more to come with only 5 career runs over hurdles. Aidan Kelly rides in this conditional jockeys’ race.
