Have you ever wondered who scores and concedes first the most, both home and away? Well look no further, as we’re taking a look at some of the key Premier League goalscoring statistics from the 2022/23 season so far.

After 27 Premier League matchdays, Arsenal sit top of the table – five points clear of holders Manchester City.

Combined, 261 matches have been played in England’s top flight this term with 704 goals being scored, which is an average of 2.70 goals per game.

With just nine matchdays to go until the champion is crowned, we’re taking a look at some of the key goalscoring statistics in the Premier League this campaign.


Who Scores First? (Overall)

For this statistic, we’re looking at who scores first the most overall this term, both home and away.

On the most part, this stat orders the teams in a similar order to the Premier League table.

Nine out of the top 10 in the Premier League table are in the top 10 for teams who score first the most.

There are a few anomalies, with Liverpool sitting in 16th place, and Crystal Palace sitting bottom of the table.

Who Concedes First? (Overall)

This statistic is similar to the last one, but will be ordered by who concedes first the most in the Premier League.

Unsurprisingly, it’s Manchester City who have conceded first the least amount of times this campaign. The Citizens have been scored past first in just five of their 27 matches this season.

And it’s West Ham and Southampton who top the list. The Hammers and the Saints have both conceded first on 18 ocassions this term.

Newcastle are top of the pile in this one. Of the Magpies’ 25 matches, six have been 0-0 stalemates.

Manchester City, Tottenham and West Ham are the only three teams to have not played in a 0-0 draw this term.

Manchester City have the best record scoring first at home. Pep Guardiola’s side have opened the scoring at the Etihad in 10 of their 13 home matches in the Premier League this season.

An interesting one is Nottingham Forest. The relegation-battlers are joint-second for the most amount of opening goals at home. The City Ground has become a fortress for the Reds, having lost there just three times in the league.

Tottenham and Brighton find themselves in midtable here, having scored first in just half of their home matches.

Who Scores First? (Away)

When looking at who scores first away from home, there are some stark contrasts.

Nottingham Forest, who are second in the table above, find themselves bottom of the pack here. Steve Cooper’s side have opened the scoring in just two of their 13 away matches.

Unsurprisingly, Manchester City top this one too. The Premier League title holders have scored first in 12 of their 14 away matches.

Liverpool’s record of scoring first away from home is very poor. The Reds are 14th, and have scored first in the same amount of away games as West Ham.

Who Concedes First? (Home)

It won’t surprise many that Southampton top this one with their terrible home form. The Saints have conceded first at home in eight of their 12 matches at the St Mary’s this term.

Spurs’ record of conceding first at home is also fairly poor. Antonio Conte’s side have been the first to concede at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 50% of their matches there this season.

Brentford, Newcastle, Manchester United and Manchester City all have the best record in this statistic, having conceded first at home just three times this campaign.

City, once again, have the best record here. The Citizens have conceded first on just two ocassions away from home this season.

West Ham join Nottingham Forest as the worst for conceding first away from home. Both have conceded first away from home 10 times this term.

Brentford’s record here is a shade of their record at home. They are the 6th worst for conceding first away from home, hacing conceded first in eight of their 12 matches.
