With Casemiro becoming the first player to see red on more than occasion this season, we are taking a look at the dirtiest Premier League players so far and breaking down why they are so popular in the referee’s book.
Dirtiest Premier League Players 2022/23
Rather incredibly, Casemiro had never received a straight red card throughout his nine-season stint in Madrid, despite consistently ranking in among the highest percentile for tackles and yellow cards.
However, his latest transgression, a high sliding challenge on Southampton’s Carlos Alcaraz, means the Brazilian has received two straight red cards in his last three games. The first came when he grabbed Crystal Palace’s Will Hughes round the neck with both hands during a team-on-team melee just over a month ago, but this latest dismissal will see him sidelined for United’s next four domestic games.

Although he now leads the way for red cards in the Premier League, there are a whole host of names above him with worse disciplinary records.
- Joelinton (Newcastle) – 10 yellow cards
- Palhinha (Fulham) – 10 yellow cards
- Cheick Doucoure (Crystal Palace) – 8 yellow cards & 1 red card
- Nelson Semedo (Wolves) – 7 yellow cards & 1 red card
- Ruben Neves (Wolves) – 9 yellow cards
- Rodrigo Bentancur (Tottenham) – 8 yellow cards
- Adam Smith (Bournemouth) 8 yellow cards
- Ivan Toney (Brentford) – 8 yellow cards
- Moises Caicedo (Brighton) – 7 yellow cards
- Casemiro (Manchester United – 5 yellow cards & 2 red cards
Both Joelinton and Palhinha lead the way in terms of most yellow cards – the former is notoriously lively in the tackle, and picked up five yellow cards within Newcastle’s first 13 games which was enough to see him serve a one-match ban against Southampton in November.
Fast-forward to now, the Brazilian has accumulated a further five cards since then, and any player who tallies 10 bookings before their side’s 32nd game of the season will serve a two-match ban. He missed his side’s 2-1 victory over Wolves last time out, and is ruled out of their away trip to Nottingham Forest on Friday.
Elsewhere, Fulham’s Palhinha also repeated a similar feat, and in less time having raced to an initial one-game suspension in September. The Portuguese midfielder has been a revelation for Marco Silva’s high-flying Fulham side, and his absence was alarming in their defeat to Arsenal over the weekend. However, he will return to the starting 11 on April Fool’s Day against Bournemouth.
Both Cheick Doucoure and Nelson Semedo also rank high among the dirtiest Premier League players having both received red cards this season – the latter was absent in their narrow defeat to City last time out after a double booking in quick succession away to Aston Villa, while Semedo was dismissed after hauling Kaoru Mitoma to the ground with a rugby-esque tackle back in December.
