Manchester United‘s Casemiro picked up his second red card of the season as he was dismissed against Southampton on Sunday.

The Brazilian midfielder lunged into a tackle, and caught Carlos Alcarez with his studs. He was originally given a yellow card, but a VAR check upgraded it to a red.

Casemiro received his second dismissal of the season, meaning it’ll now be a four game suspension. He’ll miss domestic fixtures against Fulham, Newcastle, Brentford and Everton.

Surprisingly, before joining United, Casemiro had never received a straight red card in his career. However, he now has two in his last three Premier League games.

Why Four Games?

With regular suspensions for a straight red resulting in a three game ban, when a player gets a second sending off in a season, the suspension is upgraded to four games instead of the initial three.

Erik ten Hag and United may choose to appeal the dismissal, however getting VAR to admit they made a mistake is no easy feat.

Luckily, red card suspensions are carried through domestic competitions only, so won’t have an affect on the Brazilian’s participation in the Europa League.

He will be able to play the second leg against Real Betis on Thursday. However, is still at risk of suspension in that competition too, already being on a booking.

His absence is a big blow to United, and will have missed nine games since signing come the end of this suspension. The Red Devils have relied on his strength and experience in the middle of the park, so he’ll be missed once again.

The next domestic game that Casemiro can play will be on April 15. United travel to the City Ground to take on Nottingham Forest.
