Marcus Rashford has hit back at claims that him and Manchester United ‘gave up’ in their humiliating 7-0 defeat to Liverpool at the weekend.

Rashford has scored 24 goals this season but couldn’t do enough to get his side at least a goal against Liverpool. Questions have since been asked of his side as they were blown away in the second half of the game. It’s the third time they’ve lost by four or more goals this season.

United were only trailing 1-0 at the break. However, a six-goal rampage from Jurgen Klopp’s Reds in the second half gave the Red Devils one of their most embarrassing defeats in their history.

The win at Anfield was Liverpool’s biggest ever victory against United, and one that will live long in memory.

Rashford blamed the defeat on the fact that his side were so determined to get back into the game, that they let their heads go against their opponents.

The 25-year-old was speaking in a press conference ahead of United’s Europa League meeting with Real Betis.

“We didn’t give up, that’s nonsense.

“We were unorganised, yes, communication was bad, yes, that’s why we conceded the goals. But it comes down to the fact that I believe everyone was trying to get back into the game that much, we came away from the team’s principles in and out of possession.

“I felt like the forwards were  just trying to press as a unit but we weren’t connected with the midfield. And then the same with the midfield and the defence. We were trying to get a grip of the game at 2-0 and 3-0, we were talking but I don’t think we were really in the agreement of what do do.”

He was quick to defend his side, despite the damaging scoreline. Bruno Fernandes – who captains United when Harry Maguire isn’t starting – was heavily blamed for the defeat. He received a lot of criticism from United legend Gary Neville. The former right back said the things he saw in the second half ‘were a disgrace’.
